I’m really excited to have my new and improved paranormal series back in the world.

The books have been revised and re-edited and Najla Qamber Designs has created an amazing set of series covers.
I also created a trailer for the series which you may see around Facebook.

And see below for an exclusive excerpt!

Soul Ties (Soul Ties #1)

Soul hunters sent to capture Nephilim souls never return and Ava has no choice. Return with Keir’s soul to her superiors in exchange for her freedom – or die trying.

Ava has retrieved hundreds of souls from demons and this mission doesn’t worry her, but Keir isn’t what she expected.

Half angel, half demon and a hell of a lot hotter than Ava’s usual targets. She’s tempted to get closer to Keir before she takes his soul — if he doesn’t kill her first.

As if battling a Nephilim isn’t enough, Ava faces another hurdle: finding a way past the strange human girl, Dahlia, who has an inexplicable hold on Keir.

The pair have strange secrets, and when Ava uncovers the true fate of the souls she returns to her superiors her world flips. She finds herself in the middle of a war where the lines between good and evil are blurred. Ava has two choices: kill Keir and trade his soul for her freedom, or help the man she loves and risk eternity in hell.

Excerpt:

“So what do we do with the soul hunter?” asks Dahlia.

“I don’t know. Whatever we do, they’ll just send another,” Keir replies.

“You could’ve disposed of her already, like the others; why the hell didn’t you?” Dahlia’s frustration is evident in her tone. “That might still be the best option, Keir.”

“Maybe we should tell Ava the whole truth; you told her half of it. She might back off then.”

My body slackens with relief. No mention from him about killing me. Yet.

“Why are you questioning this? She wants your soul!”

“She has doubts. I’ve seen it in her eyes.”

“Don’t be so bloody stupid, Keir. Ava’s trying to seduce you, like the others. She’ll say whatever it takes to get you in a weak enough position. The soul hunter won’t give up on this, because if she does, she may as well be dead. They won’t take her back if she fails.”

“You didn’t,” replies Keir quietly. “You’re alive.”

Ah. More of Dahlia’s secrets. I attempt to listen, but can’t hear anything of the low conversation that follows.

A couple push the double-doors open and a tall boy with his arm slung possessively over a smaller girl’s shoulders wanders past. The adoration in her eyes as she looks up at her boyfriend spikes my regret. I can’t spend time becoming close to anybody; a reminder of the loneliness of my life. The boy removes his long scarf and wraps it round the girl’s neck, pulling her to him. The girl giggles and pushes her hands into his hair as they pause for a kiss. Stomach plummeting further, I turn way, pretending to look at the notices pinned to the wall. I ignore the rising conflict: I don’t want to grow close to anybody; they’ll die or disappear. The only person who ever managed to touch the edges of my heart was Daniel, and he was out of bounds. Now he’s dead.

Cool air blows into the hallways as the door swings open again. Hairs lift on the back of my neck at the awareness somebody stands behind.

“Ava.”

I turn almost bumping noses with Keir, whose face is centimetres from mine. I’d forgotten the impossible blue of his eyes, pulling people into his Nephilim trap.

Not me.

“You cut your hair,” I say, flicking my fingers toward his head.

“And yours is a different colour.”

Memories of the night in the alley fly into my mind again. Our bodies don’t touch this time, but the strange energy flows between us. Positive there’s a desire flickering across his eyes, I close mine. Make him move away with his tricks. I take a deep breath. Wrong move because his clean scent sends more memories scattering across my mind, and heat spreads through me.

Keir’s mouth turns up at one corner. “I knew you were listening. Dahlia didn’t.”

If he’s expecting me to show surprise and yield, he can forget that. I lift my head and poke my tongue into my cheek. “So what did you decide? I think I missed the crucial part, where you decided if you were going to dispose of me, as Dahlia so delicately put it.”

“We didn’t decide anything, Ava.” Keir lifts an arm and sets his palm on the wall behind me.

Dizziness creeps in, as he winds his enchantment around and pulls me in; his lips hovering close to mine.

“If you know who I am, why I came, why didn’t you kill me in the alley?” I ask.

“You came to take my soul, correct?” I nod like a stupid kid, the one I haven’t been since before the Caelestia took and trained me. “You haven’t tried yet, why?”

The fog from his proximity clouds, and I struggle for a believable answer; one which could keep me alive. Instead, the truth falls from my mouth. “Because I want to know what you’re doing. Why you’re killing demons.”

“I don’t believe you. I think it’s because you haven’t had a chance to kill me yet.”

“I think you do believe me because you know I heard what you just said to Dahlia. You said you’d seen my doubts.”

Keir touches my hair and the sensation sparks across my scalp. “Your hair looks pretty this colour.”

I blink at his change of subject. “Yeah.”

He trails fingers toward my cheek and my stomach tightens. Stop. This is my strategy. I turn on the seduction, not the demons. Not him. I should be repulsed, but I’m far from, and I struggle as if his hold were physical.

“Do you know why I didn’t kill you that night?” he whispers, fingers settling on my lips.

I yank my head away from his touch. “No.”

Keir stops abruptly and steps back with the same look as the last time we were as close. Confusion. Desire. Anger. “Nor do I. Next time you might not be so lucky.” He grips the handle of his rucksack, lowering his voice. “Stay away from us until you decide what to do, and then we can end this.”

As he leaves, Keir pauses, hand on the door handle as he looks back. “This won’t end well for you, Ava.”

I jump as the door slams shut behind him. Spell broken, I turn away and smack my palms against the wall, holding my forehead against the cool bricks. How does he bloody do this? Silence me? Keir digs out the hidden Ava, the vulnerable girl I buried when I left the Fated and became a soul hunter.

Whenever Keir looks into my eyes, I’m transparent. Keir has the advantage and he knows.

Reprise by Lisa Swallow ~ Countdown and Chapter Reveal

Reprise FB banner

Today is ONE WEEK until Reprise releases! Today I thought I’d share the first chapter on my blog. This chapter from Riley’s point of view sets the scene for the book so you will find out some secrets — if you don’t want to know until next week maybe skip. If you do, the chapter is at the bottom of the post!

Reprise

Drummer Nate Campbell is a ‘Ruby Riot twin’ and that’s all he wants anybody to know. For Nate, girls are a dispensable distraction and the rock star life suits his needs. Nobody will expect him to hand over his heart if he pretends he doesn’t have a one.

Falling for Nate Campbell was the second biggest mistake of Riley Sawyer’s life. When the PR girl worked with the band on a European tour, she earned a reputation as an unapproachable workaholic. One mistake with Nate ruined her reputation, and Riley left vowing never to go anywhere near a tour – or Nate – again.

Two years later, Riley is forced back into the Ruby Riot world. A stolen car, a snowstorm, and Nate’s bloody-mindedness leave the pair stranded together. Nate and Riley cross their thin line between love and hate and discover a connection they don’t want to leave behind when the snow retreats.

Nate knows Riley’s the girl for him but doesn’t want to risk handing her the heart he hides. Riley wants to leave behind her secrets to move on and find love. The problem is, she wants Nate and doesn’t think he can ever be hers – or anybody’s.

Sneak peek! Chapter One

RepriseTeaser #1RILEY

I don’t spend time around Ruby Riot anymore. Ever. Sarah has the pleasure of touring Europe with the band this winter, because there’s no way in hell I’ll travel with that bunch of narcissists again. Or so I thought until today, when my supposedly reliable account manager walked out two dates before the end of the tour — no explanation. Judging by the chaos Sarah left behind, she hasn’t been doing her job properly for weeks.

This leaves me to deal with all the crap hitting the fan, and I’m forced to head up to Newcastle to take over publicity management for the last two shows. I don’t know what pisses me off the most — spending time away from London, or the famous Ruby Riot attitude I’ll face when I get there. Especially from Nate. After two years of avoiding the band, I’m thrown in the deep end and I’m determined to stay afloat.

Traffic clogs the motorways as I head North, and I swear as another idiot ignores the foggy traffic conditions and swerves across two lanes. By the time I arrive at the hotel, I’m two hours late due to the weather, and my nerves are frazzled. Ruby Riot plays their first of two dates at the Arena this evening; they won’t be back until late, and I’m too tired to deal with anything tonight. The crew has muddled through without publicity management for a couple of days; a few more hours with the junior PR girl won’t make a difference.

Beneath my decision to avoid the band tonight lies the real reason. When I first see Nate again, I need to be in a coping mood, and he needs to be sober.

As if that’s likely to ever happen.

Nate Campbell. Ruby Riot drummer and asshole of the decade. I toured with Ruby Riot when they supported Blue Phoenix two years ago and tangled myself with Nate. Not cool. Totally unprofessional behaviour for a PR girl trying to make a name for herself. I made a name all right just not the sort I wanted. When you’re spotted leaving the bathrooms with a rock star adjusting his clothes, people jump to the obvious conclusion. Me? No. I did not have sex with the guy, but I almost did.

And when I turned him down? Within an hour of telling me how I meant more to him than other girls, Nate found a new one; one who’d fall for his bullshit.

I refused to speak to him for a week; the hurt and anger eating away at any feelings I had for him. I told him I couldn’t respect a guy who treated women like shit and he shrugged it off with a ‘whatever’ attitude. I don’t even think he paid proper attention to what I was saying.

The memories I’ve kept dampened down seethe and I mutter under my breath the choice words I keep for Nate.

Everybody who was on the tour thinks the situation is cut and dry: dumb PR girl screws rock star who rejects her and she reacts badly. The jerk never put people straight about the non-sex; too big a dent to his ego, I guess. If I’d made a fuss about denying we had sex, I’m sure some people would’ve taken it as extra evidence that I in fact did.

The only words we’ve exchanged since that night in Paris, in the bathrooms at Hard Rock Café, have been nasty and hurtful. The strength of our hostility is above and beyond how normal people would behave after a failed hook-up. But the situation was more than that. We were more than that  — or Nate fooled me into thinking I was and pulled the rug away until I landed heavily on my ass.

If I’d allowed myself to see what a spoiled, selfish asshole he was from day one this would never have happened. This was a game to him. I was a joke. Our friendly relationship descended into outright nastiness and, after a couple of weeks, I left. I refuse to work with people who treat me like crap.

Now, I’m able to step back into the Ruby Riot world and do my job; I don’t care what Nate thinks. In two days time I can walk away, and hope it’s another two years until we’re forced to spend anytime near each other.

Does Nate know yet? I bet he’s as thrilled at the prospect as I am.

I shake away my brooding on Nate and my situation, and reach for my phone. There’s another person who hates me being in Newcastle as much as I do. Josh. Mum agreed to stay and look after my son at short notice, but she always has.

I said goodbye to Josh this morning before he headed to school; my heart aching at the hurt on his face. In Josh’s five years, I’ve left him too many times while I worked away. Blinkered by my need to succeed and determined to make the best life I could, I’ve made mistakes. Last time this happened, I promised him I wouldn’t stay away for more than a night. I’ve broken that promise again.

Albion peeped in.

“How’s Frankie?”

“I feel awful,” I groaned. “Food poisoning, maybe.”

“Do you need to vomit again?”

“I don’t know. Maybe.”

He fetched me a bucket. “Do you want Dad to come and check you out?”

“No, I’m okay.” I made another effort to stand. “I need to go―”

“What?” Albion’s voice rose in angry disbelief. “Frankie, are you frickin’ insane?” You’re sick.

I moaned. “I know.” I slumped back on my bed.

“If I catch you trying to leave this house tonight, I will personally handcuff you to your bed. And don’t think I haven’t got the handcuffs.” He waggled his eyebrows.

“Ugh, I’m definitely gonna vomit now.”

I went back to sleep almost immediately. Maybe it was my feverish state, or maybe my agitation over missing a night at Gaunt House, but my sleep was filled with a dream I couldn’t shake. I was standing beside a rock wall, staring at it in confusion, my mind blank and bewildered. Unexpectedly, the rock crumbled and something emerged from the wall. Hands. It was a pair of hands coming through the wall, reaching for me.

I woke the next morning to find several missed calls and text messages from Cain. He sounded increasingly panicky as the night wore on. I replied, explaining my illness, before sitting up slowly to test my steadiness. So far, so good. In fact, I felt so much more like myself that I got up and made my way into the kitchen to find some breakfast.

“Hey!” Albion smiled at me. “All better?”

“I think so. Must have been a gastro bug.”

“Don’t be so sure. A bunch of people in town got sick yesterday. Dad was out all night dishing out anti-emetics and electrolyte drinks. Lots of them had been at Misty’s Coffee Shop yesterday so the health department’s investigating.”

“Great. Salmonella?”

“Don’t know. Some people are better already but others are still getting admitted to hospital. Dad only just got to bed. I told him about you, and he let me know what to watch out for in case it got worse.” All of a sudden he gave me a hard stare.

“What?”

“Your scary boyfriend came round, late last night when you were asleep.” Albion looked deeply unimpressed. “I told him you were sick but I don’t think he believed me. He looked like he wanted to barge past me and see for himself.”

I opened the fridge door to hide my face. I could kind of understand why Albion found Cain’s behaviour objectionable. But he didn’t know what we’d been through together and how hard it had been when we were apart. “Yeah, I’ve messaged him to tell him I was sick. He was worried, I guess.”

“Tell him he’d better not try that again or I might have to ban him from coming round here.”

You and what army? I was tempted to say. But it was Albion’s house and if he didn’t like Cain coming around he had the right to say so. I emerged from the fridge and nodded, avoiding his eyes. I’d have to remind Cain not to scare Albion.

My cousin kept his gaze on me. “What do you guys do?”

“Huh?”

“I mean, do you ever go out and do, y’know … normal couple stuff? Or do you just hang in his trailer?”

I sighed inwardly and regretted telling him about Cain’s home. “We go out in a group sometimes.”

“You and Cain and who else? Jude McBride?”

I nodded.

“Isn’t that kind of weird? To go out with your boyfriend … and your ex-boyfriend, simultaneously?”

“Yes, that would be weird, Albion. But it’s not like that. Jude was never really my boyfriend and there are others in the group, too.”

“And when it’s only you and Cain?”

I was silent. Cain and I didn’t date. Not like normal couples. Weariness washed over me. I was too weak for this conversation. “I’m still not feeling well.”

He pursed his lips, observing me. “Okay,” he said, to my surprise. And then, with a quick grin, “We can pick it up again later.”

I rested and tried to avoid Albion throughout the day, sipping water and sports drinks. Maybe it was wrong, but it pleased me that Cain had come looking for me the night before. Considering my own wobbly feelings about Helen and Cain’s meeting there was something gratifying in knowing he was worried about me. I went out to Gaunt House early to see him. The electrical tower buzzed loudly in the yellow afternoon light … strange. I hadn’t seen it do that for a long while. Cain must have heard my car arrive because he suddenly appeared outside the ruin, hovering while I parked. I smiled at the sight of him, that lean muscular frame and dark hair, unkempt as always and falling over his forehead. When I got out of my car he seized me like he hadn’t seen me for weeks and just about squeezed the breath out of me.

“Jesus Christ,” he muttered. “Are you okay?”

I laughed, hugging him back. “It was a stomach bug. I’m fine. Ow,” I added when the embrace became uncomfortable.

“Oh God, I’m so sorry.” He released me instantly. “I’m a fucking jerk.”

That made me stare and notice how agitated he looked. “What’s wrong?”

He rubbed a hand through his hair and hovered for a moment. “Come on, Francesca. Come down with me. I’m sorry. Let’s talk.”

I did as he said. He got us both beers but I declined since my stomach wasn’t completely right yet. He opened his and took a huge gulp.

“Cain?” I was scared now.

Long silence. “Francesca. I’m sorry.”

Sorry, again? What was going on?

NESS

When Evan appears, he’s jacketless despite the cool day. I shiver; just looking at him in his thin T-shirt makes me cold but also warm inside. I can’t help but feel a little smug when I take in the sight of my hot-as-hell boyfriend. With his damp-chested, mussed hair, post-workout look, he fuels the less than clean thoughts I have about him as I watch.

Evan doesn’t notice me at first; he’s on the phone and his eyebrows are pulled together in consternation. I recognise his hunched stance as frustration, and suspect he’s talking to his sister. Evan rests against the pillar outside as he continues his conversation, oblivious to those around.

A slender girl with long blonde hair passes me with her equally blonde friend. I watch them. Do they share the same box of hair dye to go with their identical straightened hair and designer gym gear?

“Book me in with him,” one of them says and giggles.

I jump to alert. There’s only one ‘him’ in the vicinity.

“Nope, all mine. Twice a week.” The giggling intensifies, and an unfamiliar feeling creeps across my scalp when it’s apparent they’re talking about Evan. Jealousy.

“He can get me hot and sweaty anytime!”

I tense at their immature sizing up of my boyfriend. Then I find myself doing something I didn’t intend. I stalk across the path towards Evan and dump my bag on the floor.

Evan’s eyes widen in surprise and he finishes the call. “Ness!”

Without a word, I slowly moisten my lips, and his eyes darken as I move in to kiss him. Evan grabs my rear and pulls me against his soaked chest, crushing his mouth against mine. He smells of workout sweat and deodorant, a mingled scent I associate with Evan – and sex. Tongue darting into my mouth, Evan holds me tighter. I’m lost in time for a moment, until Evan peels me off him.

“Well, that was an unexpected surprise.” He regards me with shining eyes. “Not like you.”

I smile up at him, loving his reaction. “I brought you lunch.”

“Suddenly, I’m not very hungry.” The intent almost has my agreement, but I control myself.

“I am. I brought a picnic.” I rummage in my bag, and from the corner of my eye, I spot the girls staring at us. An immature sense of triumph fills me. God, I might as well just stamp my name and phone number on his head.

“Damn. Okay then.” He kisses the top of my head and laces his fingers in mine. I disentangle them and push Evan’s arm over my shoulder, wrapping mine around his waist. If I’m going to behave like I’m fifteen, I may as well continue. I shoot the girls a look on the way past.

We find a picnic spot on campus nearby, a wooden bench amongst the trees, autumn leaves at our feet. I snap open the container lids and hand Evan a fork.

“Picnic? That’s my thing.” He peers into the container. “Looks good. Makes me think of Santorini.”

My face heats at the memory of that particular town – and what we did on the beach. In the dark. The curve to his mouth when he meets my red face draws me back from the sandy memories.

“I’m glad this is distracting you,” I say.

“Distracting me?”

“The last week or so you’ve seemed like you’re carrying stuff again. Is Lucy okay?”

Evan scratches the edge of his eye. He doesn’t realise, but he does this when he’s about to hide something from me. “She’s okay. Well, not really. But nothing major.”

After a few moments, I realise this is the limit of his conversation on Lucy. So I dig into my salad and close my eyes, wishing we were back in Greece. Carefree. I open an eye – life isn’t like that. Evan stabs at his salad; he has some sauce by his mouth, so I rub it off with my thumb.

Catching my hand, he sucks off the sauce, firing heat inside me. “Thanks for this,” he says. “It’s always nice to have extra time for us.”

“Come over tonight?” I suggest.

“Of course.”

“But I have early classes tomorrow.”

“I’ll get you to bed early,” he says, and leans over, running his tongue along my bottom lip. I inhale sharply, and he laughs against my mouth.

I lick the salty sauce he left on my mouth and his eyes zone in. We’re sharing a picnic and somehow it’s become an exercise in eye sex. We really need to spend more time together.

“You still okay for Saturday?” I ask, pushing a forkful of food into my mouth.

“Saturday?”

“The MedSoc thing?”

“Shit.”

“What?”

“I have to go to Lancaster. I promised Lucy…” He trails off and focuses on his food.

Heart plummeting back into the realm of insecurity, I breathe deeply. “So no then?”

“I forgot. I’m sorry.”

“I told you weeks ago about this night! This is important. You always complain I don’t involve you in this stuff.” The attempt at hiding my irritation fails.

“I said I’m sorry,” he says, tone hard.

“Fine. There’ll be other times.” I stab a piece of feta and look the other way as I eat.

We continue our meal in silence. “What did you promise her?”

He looks up sharply. “Lucy? Just Lucy stuff. I should’ve thought. Sorry.”

I sink back against the bench with enough force to show Evan I’m pissed off with him. Evan doesn’t react and we finish our picnic in silence. He promised we’d go to the MedSoc night together. Does Lucy really need him that much he’d let me down? Evan said it’s nothing major, and he’s lying. So much for revisiting the summer today. What we’re doing now is rewinding to last year. To Lucy and whatever the hell Evan isn’t telling me.

Ness’s parents have planned her life but Ness is determined to control her own future. She leaves home and moves to Leeds with childhood friend, Abby, and shocks her parents by turning down a place at medical school to take a job in a call-centre.

Ness meets Evan, a student friend of Abby’s, and isn’t impressed. He’s drunk, arrogant and rarely spends the night without a girl in his bed. But unlike most guys she meets Evan quotes poetry and can hold a conversation, forcing Ness to change her opinion.

Evan is struggling to escape too and throws himself into the student lifestyle to hide from the past following him. In Ness, Evan finds somebody who shares the need to walk away from what people expect him to be.

But Evan can’t hide from his past forever and when Lucy appears she threatens his new relationship with Ness. Ness is unsure she can deal with the effect Lucy has on Evan, and makes a new decision about her future.

Chapter One

AUTUMN

NESS

There’s a stranger lying in my bed. The streetlight casts an orange glow through the open curtains and across the tell-tale mound, and underneath my brand new and expensive bedding is a snoring figure. A male, judging by the size, and by the decibels. When I left for work this evening, the bed was definitely vacant.
I drop my bag on my carpeted bedroom floor and swear loudly. He doesn’t hear. I’m not surprised; the noise of voices and music downstairs would drown out the sound of my murderous intent towards this moron. I’m exhausted after an eight-hour shift and this is not what I need.
Slamming the door behind me, I head for the stairs. The tatty furniture of the lounge room is covered with people, although littered is the term I’d use. Half a dozen inebriated, scruffy students are draped over the brown sofa or propped against each other on the threadbare carpet. A couple gaze at me absently. My housemate, Abby, squints and pulls herself unsteadily to her feet. She staggers towards me, her drink sloshing from the cup onto the dirty floor.
“Ness!” she cries, trying to hug me. “You’re home!”
I step back. “I’ve been home for half an hour.”
She blinks. “Have you?”
Her long brown hair escaped the straightening tongs this evening and sticks up on one side. Abby’s smeared lipstick and her boyfriend, Matt, nearby indicate why she didn’t notice me coming home.
“Who is in my bed?”
Abby gives me a look; one I’ve learned to identify over the years. She’s beyond any chance of reasonable conversation. “No idea.”
“Abby, I’ve been working all night. I’m knackered. I want to go to bed and there’s one of your guests occupying it.”
Abby giggles.
“Not funny!” I snap. “You can’t do this every night; weekends only for parties. Please.”
We agreed to share a house, her as a student, me working full-time. What a huge mistake.
“It’s not my fault…”
“What? You mean we were invaded? They just let themselves into the house?”
The people in the room are becoming familiar, the same set of friends arranged in their favourite places around the room. Drinking and smoking, discussing politics and listening to Lou Reed. So hip, so retro. So clichéd.
“No, but…” She puts a hand over her mouth, making a noise somewhere between a hiccup and a burp. No, but… she’s the only first year student in the group who lives in her own house. When the pubs and clubs shut, the friends can’t fit everyone into one of their dorm rooms, and I have the pleasure of their company most nights. I want to shout at Abby, tell her how selfish she’s being, but there’s no point. Her goldfish memory is worse when she’s drunk, and she won’t remember a thing I say in the morning.
“So where do I sleep?” As if I’m going to get any sleep in party central anyway.
Again, Abby looks at me blankly.
“For god’s sake, Abby!”
This is pointless. I pick my way through the bohemian bodies on the floor and into the kitchen. Empty bottles and dinner plates vie for a place on the cluttered kitchen counter. There’re two glasses left in the white cupboards and I fill one with water.
Why did I join student Abby in Leeds when I’d rejected a place at the university myself? I’m rubbing my parents’ faces in it while I lower myself into the life of a call centre drone. Pride of the family, Vanessa, was always going to be a doctor, like Daddy. Or she was until I said ‘screw that’. I’m not their precious Vanessa who they can mould into what they decide I should be. I’m Ness, and I’m doing what I want with my life.
As I regard the state of the so-called elite, studying class around me, I’m doubly glad I’m not one of them.
“’Scuse me.”
I sidestep the sink and turn to the voice. A tall guy leans against the doorframe, trying to appear nonchalant, but his slackened stance indicates he’s attempting to keep himself upright. His brown hair is longer at the front and spills into his face; unfocused brown eyes look in my direction. This person is one of the regulars. I don’t pay a lot of attention to Abby’s friends, but he’s a good-looking guy; and however hard I tried not to, I’ve noticed him, but not only because of his looks.
Some nights as I eat a late dinner after work at the table in the corner, I watch the group from my seat with a mixture of despair and amusement, and this guy intrigues me. Girls gravitate to him, and he turns on his smile and soaks up their attention, but something I can’t put my finger on hovers around the confident persona. This guy has his place as the joker who ensures he’s at the centre of the group, but some nights he’s quiet and focuses more on drinking and less on girls. Like tonight.
“Yes?” I snap, not in the mood.
He sweeps a gaze along the length of me, eyes lingering on where my work shirt stretches across my breasts. Unbelievable… I straighten my sleeves and look at him with an eyebrow raised.
“Are you Abby’s housemate?” he asks.
“Who are you?”
“Evan.” He rubs his nose. “You’re not a student.”
“Correct, I am the one not lying in a drunken haze on the floor contemplating my navel.”
Evan takes a step forward, steadying himself on the counter with one hand, as my witty repartee sails over his head. “Why?”
“Why am I not on the floor drunk?”
“Why aren’t you a student?”
“Because I work instead.”
“Hmm.” He grasps onto the sink, searching for a glass. I pass him the spare one. “Did you fail?”
“Fail what?”
Evan fills the glass. “Or are you just not smart enough for uni? What is it you do?” He gulps the water in three mouthfuls then wipes his mouth with his hand.
The arrogant bloody… “That’s right, I’m not smart enough. I’m living with Abby until I can find a nice man to marry then I can have my kids and a house in the suburbs. Because, as I’m not a student, I have no future.”
Evan leans against the sink, his tall frame dominating the small kitchen. “Fair enough.”
Oh my god, he believes me. How drunk is he exactly? “So, you think anyone who doesn’t go to university is inferior to you?”
I’ve seen Abby’s friends looking down their noses at me. To make things worse, the locals band together and hate students, and the students do the same and clash with the locals. I’m neither. I can’t win.
We’re close now and Evan smells of alcohol and pot, with a faint hint of a clean scent lingering on his clothes. His plain blue T-shirt rides up as he leans against the sink; that’s a serious set of abs he has. Okay, I can’t help myself, I check him out. Beneath his fringe, Evan has deep brown eyes. Incoherent eyes. I hate to admit, but something about him is seriously sexy.
Even if he is a dick.
“Well, if you’ll excuse me,” I say.
He sniggers.
“What’s funny?”
“You sound like the Queen.”
Not this again. I get enough crap at work; I moved from Surrey to Yorkshire and suddenly I’m ‘stuck up Home Counties girl’.
I don’t dignify Evan’s comment with an answer, turn away, and walk out of the kitchen.
“Want me to get the guy out of your bed?” Evan calls after me.
I stop and look round. “You know him?”
“I could replace him.”
My mouth drops open at his arrogance. An attempt at a flirtatious smile plays around his lips, but the unfocused eyes kill the effect he’s trying to achieve. He’s serious. Evan has his ready supply of eager girls; I guess it doesn’t matter to them how conceited he is. Some girls go for his type. Not me.
I step towards him. “Evan, I am not one of those drunk girls in there. I have no interest in you getting into my bed. Good night.”
Feeling happy with my retort, I weave back through the lounge in the direction of the stairs. Behind me, Evan impersonates my words with an exaggerated posh accent.
It’s a good thing I’m sober; otherwise, I’d go back and slap him.

Will Campbell, Ruby Riot bassist, is back at university and failing badly at everything apart from partying.

With Ruby Riot on a break, Will returns to university to finish his degree. He needs major help if he wants to pass his final year and attempts to join a not-very-rock star study group. Will is horrified to discover the person organising the group is Fleur Roberts, the girl he’s secretly crushed on for two years and who recently threatened him with a restraining order.

Fleur’s rock stars are history academics. She has no interest in any variety of pierced, tattooed slacker, especially not the jackass rock star who humiliated her at a party. There’s no way in Hell that Will Campbell is joining her group.

Faced with losing the easiest way to fix his academic problems, Will has the perfect solution: pretend he’s his twin, Nate. Will and Nate have swapped identities before so nothing can go wrong. Surely.

Fleur is successful academically, but her love life is a failure. Following a number of disastrous dates, she finds herself falling in love with a guy who is lying to her. But Will’s deceit isn’t the only thing about to shatter her world. When another man Fleur trusted betrays her, and she attempts to retaliate, Fleur discovers how dangerous he is. And when Will becomes involved, the repercussions threaten both of their futures.
